The job
What a shingle repair actually involves
Quick answer
Shingle repair in Memphis usually means replacing wind-lifted or missing tabs across one or two courses and resealing them, often in a single visit. It makes sense when the rest of the roof still lies flat and holds its granules. When damage covers most of a slope, or the roof is near twenty years old, a bigger repair or a replacement is the better spend.
Most shingle damage we see here is wind, not age. A gust gets under the leading edge of a tab, breaks the factory sealant strip and folds the shingle back. Often it creases and lies back down, looking fine from the street while water gets in at the nail line.
A proper repair is more than a new shingle. The course above has to be lifted without cracking it, the damaged pieces removed nail by nail, the new ones fastened in the right zone, and every lifted tab hand-sealed.

Cost
What drives the price of a shingle repair
Shingle repairs are priced by the visit and the courses touched, not by the square.
- Damaged areas
One cluster on one slope is short work; scattered damage on four slopes is not.
- Roof pitch
Steep roofs need harnesses, roof jacks and more time per shingle.
- Shingle match
Discontinued profiles may mean sourcing or borrowing from a hidden slope.
- Brittleness
Old shingles crack when lifted, which widens the repair.
- Underlayment
Torn or wet felt under missing tabs gets patched first.
- Ridge and hip work
Caps are cut and nailed one by one and take longer per foot.
- Access and height
Two-story walls and tight lots change how material gets up.
Missing and Blown-Off shingles
If you found shingle pieces in the yard or gutters, the exposed spot is usually bare felt or bare decking with nail holes open to the rain. We replace the missing tabs and refasten the course above them, because the shingle overhead was nailed through the one that blew off. New shingles get four or six nails in the manufacturer's nail zone, and the tabs are hand-sealed where the factory strip will not bond yet. We also walk the other slopes, since wind that tears one course off usually breaks the seal on neighbors that have not moved.

Cracked, curling and Granule-Loss shingles
Curled edges, cracks across the tab and bald patches where granules have washed into the gutters come from age and heat, not one storm. A few isolated cracked tabs can be replaced one at a time. Widespread curling is different: the asphalt has dried out, and new shingles set among brittle ones will not seal well to them. In that case we show you photos of the worst areas, explain what a repair would and would not fix, and let you decide.

Ridge cap and hip shingle repair
Ridge and hip caps take the most wind on any roof and are often the first thing to go in a storm. Cap shingles are bent over the peak, so older ones crack along the fold even without wind. We remove damaged caps back to a sound one, check the ridge vent beneath, and fasten new caps with longer nails that reach solid wood. Where the originals were cut from three-tab shingles, we switch to purpose-made ridge shingles from GAF, Owens Corning or CertainTeed, which hold their shape and seal better.

Local conditions
Why a shingle match takes care here
Shelby County lets a roof be repaired with new shingles, but its own roofing guidance warns that manufacturers change shingle sizes over time, and on Memphis roofs that detail matters. On the ranch-style homes common in Bartlett and the Craftsman and Neocolonial houses in Cordova, the original shingle may be a profile that is no longer made, and a new tab a fraction wider will not line up with the course. We measure the exposure before ordering and, where needed, borrow matching shingles from a hidden slope.

Warning signs
Signs of shingle damage worth fixing
- Pieces in the yard
Even one tab on the ground means an open spot above.
- Lifted edges in a row
Tabs that flutter or sit high have lost their seal.
- Bare patches
Missing granules expose asphalt that then cracks in the sun.
- Creases across tabs
Wind folded the shingle back; it will leak at the nails.
- New stain after rain
A fresh ceiling spot often traces to lifted shingles upslope.
FAQ
Shingle repair questions from Memphis homeowners
Close, rarely perfect, since even the same product weathers differently. When the match is poor, we move shingles from a hidden slope to the visible spot.
Often, when it is dry and damage is limited to a few courses. If the match must be ordered, we cover the exposed area first.
It can be if the shingles still lie flat and hold granules. When lifting one course cracks the next, repairs cost more than they save, and we say so.
Possibly, if a covered storm caused it, but many small repairs fall below the deductible. You get photos and a written scope either way.
Most take one to three hours on the roof. Steep pitches, ridge work and hard matches add time.
