Quick answer
In Memphis, asphalt shingles cost less up front, about $4.00 per square foot installed against about $8.25 for metal in one 2026 local calculator, and suit most homes. Metal costs more but lasts longer, reflects summer heat and sheds wind well, though it can dent in hail. Budget, how long you will stay and the house itself decide it.
Cost up front
Metal is the bigger check. One 2026 Memphis cost calculator puts asphalt shingles at about $4.00 per square foot installed and metal at about $8.25, roughly double. At the top end, a local guide puts premium systems such as standing seam at $40,000 to $100,000 on a 2,500 square foot home. Architectural shingles, the local default, came in at about $420 to $500 per square in a 2025 Memphis breakdown.
Metal's case is the long run: it can outlast more than one shingle roof, and standing seam needs little upkeep.
Heat and energy
Summer is the main event for a Memphis roof. In summer 2026, Extreme Heat Warnings covered the region as the city reached its hottest day of the year. Dark shingles absorb that sun and pass heat into the attic; metal with a reflective finish sends much of it back, and the attic runs cooler. Ventilation matters under both, and a well-vented attic under shingles closes much of the gap. Our attic ventilation guide explains how.

Wind and hail
Most storm damage here comes from straight-line wind, and metal handles wind well: standing seam panels have no tabs to lift. Architectural shingles nailed to the maker's pattern also carry high wind ratings, and impact-rated lines exist for hail.
Hail is metal's weak point for looks, not leaks. A September 2026 watch listed hail damage and roof wind damage as expected impacts for Bartlett and Millington. Metal rarely leaks after hail but can dent, and textured or striated panels hide small dents far better than flat ones. Shingles bruise instead, which is harder to see and can lead to leaks later.

| Installed cost, one 2026 calculator | About $4.00 per sq ft | About $8.25 per sq ft |
| Summer heat | Absorbs heat; ventilation matters | Reflective finishes run cooler |
| Wind | Good when nailed to spec | Excellent, especially standing seam |

Lifespan and upkeep
Standing seam metal, with hidden clips and no exposed screws, needs very little attention. Exposed-fastener panels are cheaper but need their gasketed screws checked every few years and replaced over the roof's life. Shingles need their pipe boots, sealant and flashing looked after, which is what a maintenance visit is for. Our guide on how long a Memphis roof lasts covers the lifespan side.

Noise, looks and neighborhood fit
Metal over a solid deck and an insulated attic is not loud in rain; the noise people remember comes from barns with open framing. Looks are the bigger question. Metal suits modern houses, farmhouses and many ranch homes. In historic districts such as Central Gardens, a locally protected Historic Overlay District, visible material changes deserve a check before you commit, and designer shingles are often the better fit.

Which one we recommend, and when
For most Memphis homes we price architectural shingles first, because they fit the budget and the house and perform well when installed and ventilated properly. We suggest a metal roof to owners planning to stay a long time, homes with long, simple roof planes, and anyone who wants a cooler attic in summer. Either way, the estimate names the product and shows the other option's price, so the choice is yours. Our roof replacement page covers the full process.

FAQ
Shingle vs metal questions
If you plan to stay long enough, often yes: it lasts longer, reflects heat and handles wind. If budget comes first, architectural shingles are the better value.
Usually the opposite. Reflective finishes send back much of the summer sun, and the attic runs cooler than under dark shingles.
Hail can dent metal but rarely makes it leak. Textured panels hide small dents better.
Not over a solid deck with underlayment and an insulated attic.
Yes, though in historic districts visible materials deserve a check first, and the framing is looked at before any heavy material.
Metal, by a wide margin, when installed and maintained correctly.
